Bring Them Up

Ephesians 6:4 says, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

Dads, don’t exasperate your kids. The same things that exasperate or frustrate you, frustrates your kids. Dishonesty, unreliability, uncertainty, untrustworthy people, lack of understanding–don’t be any of those things to your kids. They are depending on you to be bigger than that.

Instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. That means you, dad. You do it. You represent something big to your kids. They look up to you and depend on you. God knows that, which is why He has directed this specifically at fathers. The best way for you to do that is to follow the training and instruction of the Lord yourself.

We want our kids to be wise enough to not give in to peer pressure. We want them to do well in school, so they can have a good career, to be respected in the community, to keep themselves from sin.

Look at these words from Psalm 119: “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me (peer pressure). I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes (good students). I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts (respect). I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word (keep from sin)” (Psalm 119:97-105).

The best way for you to train your kids is for you to be trained in God’s word yourself. We want to be a good example for our children and grandchildren and generations to come.

Psalm 119 continues: “Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end” (Psalm 119:111-112).

Follow what God’s instructions are for your life as exactly and unwavering as you can and teach your kids to do the same and this verse will be true of you and your children: “Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble” (Psalm 119:165).
