Show Yourself A Man

Gideon, after being told by God that he was the one to deliver his people from the Midianites, gathered his army and camped at a spring just south of the Midianite camp. In the morning, the Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. Announce now to the people, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ So twenty two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained” (Judges 7:2-3).

Gideon didn’t want to do this job anyway, so about now he must be wondering what he has gotten himself into. But, God wasn’t done with him yet. He further whittled the army down until there were just three hundred left. Now what, Gideon? It’s gut check time. Will you still stand up and fight as the Lord has directed you, or is it time for you to go home, too?

What would you have done? It’s easy to say, “I’d stay and fight,” but remember, at the first chance to quit, two thirds of Gideon’s army went home.

Tying a rubber band around your ankle and jumping from a bridge is one kind of courage. Paddling into the roar of the whitewater is another, but taking the lead when lives are on the line is another altogether. That’s what Gideon was facing. God had placed squarely on his shoulders the responsibility of leading these three hundred men into battle. It’s one thing to be genetically male; it’s another thing to be a man. It was time for Gideon to be a man.

King David told his son Solomon, “I am about to go the way of all the earth, so be strong, show yourself a man” (1 Kings 2:2). We show ourselves a man when we, like Gideon, don’t check out and go home when the odds aren’t in our favor. Proverbs 24:10 says, “If you faint in the day of adversity, how small is your strength!”

There are times when being the leader isn’t the job we want; things aren’t good at home, bills are piling up or kids are acting up. The odds are getting stacked against us, but that’s when we are needed the most. God needs men to stand up in their homes, churches and communities; it’s time to show ourselves a man.
