There is an account in the Bible of a day when King David was almost killed in battle. It’s found in 2 Samuel.

“Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted. And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighted 300 shekels and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David. But Abishai, son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, ‘Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished” (2 Samuel 21:15-17).

“Never again will you go out with us to battle;” those had to be pretty sad words for David to hear.

Daniel wrote, “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them” (Daniel 2:20). For David, the mighty warrior, the season has changed. We’ve all experienced that; we’re on top for a season and the bottom the next. One thing about that–seasons change. Whether summer or winter, good or bad–seasons change. That is both good news and words of caution. Caution because we’re not on top forever; every record gets broken. We’re not underneath forever either. Seasons change.

David wrote, “The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you who made both summer and winter” (Psalm 74:16-17).

God made both summer and winter; summer to grow fruit; winter to grow roots; both equal in value. Genesis says, “And God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). If God saw that it was very good, so should we. That may be easier said than done, but always remember that God is in it with us; and, God is good.

So, whether you are bearing fruit or growing roots, keep close to the One who made the seasons. You’ll come out stronger in the end.
